But, according to other source, friendship between India and Myanmar grow up with treaty and a visit

India Myanmar relations finally got better after the two nations signed the Treaty of Friendship in 1951. Later, the foundation of their friendship became more robust and more meaningful after Rajiv Gandhi’s visit in 1987 (Source)

So, my question is when both nations signed a treaty of friendship and have conducted operations like operation sunshine to counter Insurgency, What event in 1962 is author referring to in his answer on defense studies which led to Myanmar giving land to separatist groups?

I believe this question can be answered to some degree by looking at the history tab in the wikipedia article about Myanmar.

  • You seem to take the second quote to mean that nothing happened in the relationship between 1951 and 1987. That seems ... unlikely at best.

In 1962 there was a coup d'état in Myanmar. Maybe India did not approve... Commented Jul 11 at 12:49
  • Is the source cited in the question reliable? in the site used as source is written "The answers will reflect the views of the experts and not necessarily that of the IDSA or of the Government of India." and no source or event are cited

As mentioned in a comment the 1962 coup completely changed the context. Under Ne Win, Myanmar looked inward politically and economically. Even native-born people of Indian descent were expelled from the country.

  • I'm not sure.... in the source cited there is no reference about "support of indian insurgent" but just "Burma also turned away from the outside world"

  • Hmm, yeah, that's valid... More research needed.
